Air Filter Types Compared: Fiberglass, Pleated, HEPA, and Electrostatic

Summary: Not all air filters are created equal. Understanding the differences between filter types helps you make the best choice for your health, your HVAC system, and your budget.

MERV Rating: The Key Number

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates filters from 1–20. Higher MERV = more particles captured = more airflow restriction. Most residential HVAC systems are designed for MERV 6–12 filters.

Fiberglass Filters (MERV 1–4)

The cheapest option. Captures large particles like dust and lint, but misses pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and most bacteria. Only recommended if your HVAC system requires minimal airflow restriction.

  • Very low cost ($1–3)
  • Minimal airflow restriction
  • Poor air cleaning performance

Pleated Filters (MERV 8–12)

The sweet spot for most homes. Larger surface area catches much finer particles while maintaining acceptable airflow. Captures pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and some bacteria.

  • Good balance of filtration and airflow
  • Moderate cost ($10–25)
  • Recommended for most Chicago homes

HEPA Filters (MERV 17–20)

HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger — including many viruses. However, they're too restrictive for standard residential HVAC ductwork. HEPA filtration in home systems requires a specially engineered whole-home unit with a bypass design.

Electrostatic Filters

Use static electricity to attract particles. Washable and reusable — but require monthly cleaning and lose effectiveness when dirty. Performance is uneven and not recommended for allergy sufferers.

Our Recommendation

For most Chicago homes: MERV 10–11 pleated filter, changed every 60–90 days. For allergy sufferers or homes with pets: consider a whole-home media filter with MERV 13–16 rating, designed specifically for residential systems. Call us to discuss the right solution for your equipment.
